SMLE Retake Policy Explained: Official SCFHS Rules for Failing and Score Improvement 2026

SMLE attempts are limited. Before paying for a retake or a score-improvement attempt, confirm the allowance and validity associated with your current SCFHS eligibility record.

Before booking another attempt

  • Read the current SCFHS policy and your eligibility record.
  • Confirm whether the attempt is to pass or to improve a passing score.
  • Check permit validity, remaining attempts, booking fees and available seats.
  • Use your previous feedback to change the preparation plan.

For an overview of eligibility, exam format, registration and preparation, read our SMLE exam guide.

How many SMLE attempts are allowed?

Attempt limits are not unlimited. The 2026 applicant guide describes four annual attempts to pass, while the SCFHS examination page describes two additional attempts after an initial failure. These public statements differ. Check the allowance and validity on your current eligibility record with SCFHS before paying for a retake. Score-improvement attempts have their own conditions.

This difference between public sources is a reason to ask SCFHS about your record, not a reason to assume unlimited attempts or choose the more generous interpretation. The official source links below are provided so you can review the current wording.

Can I retake after passing?

  1. Ask SCFHS whether a score-improvement attempt is available on your record.
  2. Confirm which result your receiving programme uses.
  3. Check application-year and validity restrictions. Improvement attempts have separate conditions from attempts to pass.

What should I check before booking?

  1. Confirm your official previous result.
  2. Check your active eligibility, allowed attempts and expiry date.
  3. Resolve any category or document requirements in your SCFHS application.
  4. Review the published testing windows and local Prometric seat availability.
  5. Confirm the price and rescheduling or cancellation terms shown at booking.
  6. Save the permit and appointment confirmation.

A previous verification report does not guarantee that every later application is automatically approved. Ask whether additional evidence or an updated report is needed for your route.

Is there a fixed waiting period?

This guide does not assert one waiting period that applies to all candidates. Use the conditions shown in your eligibility record and the current official instructions. An open testing window alone does not prove you can book another attempt.

How to prepare differently for a retake

Start with the official domain feedback and your practice error log. Separate missing knowledge from misreading, reasoning errors and pacing problems. Review the current syllabus: Medicine 30%, Obstetrics and Gynaecology 25%, Pediatrics 25%, Surgery 20%.

  1. Select the weakest or least-covered topics.
  2. Review their clinical pathways and explanations.
  3. Practise related SMLE-style questions.
  4. Revisit errors after an interval and explain why alternatives are wrong.
  5. Practise timed blocks and a full-length session before choosing a new appointment.

A Grand Mock score is an estimated practice result, not an official prediction or guarantee. Repeating familiar questions can increase the estimate without demonstrating the same improvement on unseen questions.

When are retake results released?

The 2026 applicant guide gives two to six weeks after the testing window ends. See the results guide. Passing does not automatically grant a practising licence or residency place.
